Practical benefits for the work you do

A useful setup.
Tools that earn their place.

Spend less time organising the records and more time using what they tell you.

01

Categories for the way you work

Start with software and subscriptions, subcontractors, training, travel, professional fees and insurance. Add a category for a specialist cost when needed.

02

Invoices in the same workspace

Create clear customer invoices and print or download the PDF. Record payments and keep unpaid customer balances visible alongside your books.

03

Less admin for regular clients

Use recurring invoice schedules for regular customer billing. Organise repeat work without having to start every invoice from scratch.

04

Compare client projects

Enable the included project module to allocate income and direct costs to a client project. See subcontractor costs and other spending against the work they support.

05

Bring bank and PayPal records together

Upload exported CSV files, review the entries and allocate costs in one place. PayPal currency balances and GBP accounting values help make overseas receipts clearer.

06

See where the business stands

Review current profit and loss from processed entries. Balance sheet help keeps outstanding customer balances, assets, loans and missing opening information in view.

See how simple the everyday work can be

Keep the client work and the money connected.

  1. 1

    Import your business activity

Bring in client payments and purchases from bank or PayPal CSV statements.

  2. 2

    Allocate the direct costs

Give a freelance subcontractor's invoice the Subcontractors category and add the client project if you use projects.

  3. 3

    Review your position

Check project figures, unpaid customer balances and the current profit and loss before taking on the next piece of work.

Start with something useful

Categories that already
make sense for your business.

These are the starting categories in the Freelance / Professional Services template. Add your own as your business grows.

Client projects are optional. Enable them to separate work for customers while keeping everything in the same company accounts.

Your everyday records. The yearly picture.

Know what is there.
See what is still needed.

Current profit and loss shows the income and costs in your processed records. Balance Sheet Interpretation helps you review assets, stock, debtors, cash, creditors and loans alongside missing starting information.

The Ask UKTax yearly books review uses one credit and saves a practical report. Open that saved report again without spending another credit.

A clearer way to get the books right

  • Check the statements you have brought in
  • Review entries that still need a category or VAT check
  • Find missing opening balances and supporting records
  • Review property or project allocation where needed
  • Use the saved yearly review to work through the next steps
20 Ask UKTax question credits each paid month. Unused credits roll over.

Clear answers before you start

Your business.
Your questions.

Can I use recurring invoices for a regular client?

Yes. Recurring invoice schedules are included, alongside PDF invoices and payment recording. They help organise regular billing; they are separate from a customer payment collection service.

Can I see the costs of one client project?

Yes. Enable projects, create the client project and allocate its income and costs. Project figures depend on the entries you have allocated and processed.

Can I record income received through PayPal in another currency?

Yes. PayPal imports keep currency balances separate and show the GBP accounting value. Review the conversion and supporting information before processing the receipt.

How do I start with this template?

Create your company workspace, then choose Freelance / Professional Services during business setup. You can explore before completing the full onboarding checklist. For an existing business, gather statements and opening balances when you are ready to use your records fully.

What is included, and how does the trial work?

Bank and PayPal CSV imports, entry allocation, invoicing, reports, projects, team access and 20 Ask UKTax question credits each paid month are included. The 30-day trial includes 5 question credits. Stripe verifies your card without taking a trial payment; you choose whether to subscribe at the end. Professional accountancy and external filing service charges are separate.

What VAT support is included?

Review VAT on your entries, plan period dates, see return figures and export the filing workbook for your external filing service. Direct HMRC VAT filing requires production approval. VAT treatment depends on the transaction and supporting information, rather than the template you choose.
